If you have decided to trek in Kashmir, you have already made a brilliant choice. However, you now face the difficult decision of choosing between its two crown jewels: The Kashmir Great Lakes (KGL) and the Tarsar Marsar trek.
The Views & Scenery
KGL is famous for its grand scale. You cross three high-altitude passes and see seven distinct, massive alpine lakes. It is rugged, dramatic, and expansive.
Tarsar Marsar, on the other hand, is intimately beautiful. While KGL gives you lakes viewed from a distance or from a pass, Tarsar Marsar allows you to camp right on the shores of these stunning almond-shaped lakes.
Difficulty Level
KGL is significantly harder. The ascents and descents over the three passes are steep and demanding on the knees. It requires a solid foundation of fitness and previous trekking experience is highly recommended.
Tarsar Marsar is more forgiving. While still a high-altitude trek requiring good fitness, the climbs are more gradual, making it a great option for enthusiastic beginners or those looking for a slightly more relaxed pace.
The Verdict
Choose KGL if you want a physical challenge paired with grand, sweeping landscapes. Choose Tarsar Marsar if you prefer pristine, romantic campsites right beside the water and a slightly less grueling physical demand.
